HAGEN.- The Osthaus Museum Hagen will show 195 works of art from the renowned Huma Kabakci Collection from May 9 to July 25, 2010 – the first such display ever in Europe. The collection includes some of the most important paintings and sculptures created by Turkish artists between 1950 and 2010.

With a focus on contemporary and modern art from Istanbul, the exhibition provides a novel yet in-depth look at the Turkish art scene. It also includes pictures by the highly regarded Turkish-Armenian photographer Ara Güler, some of which show captivating moments of everyday life in Istanbul. The show is a unique, sometimes explosive blend of Western and Eastern artistic traditions.

The artworks form part of the exhibition 'Istanbul - Collection Huma Kabacki' that for the first time in Europe puts 195 works of Turkish art from 1950 to present on display between 09 May and 25 July 2010

Nahit Kabakci started collecting Turkish art in the 1970s. By this time, Turkish artists had not just been observing European influences but had adapted them to local and regional cultural traditions in the fields of tension between abstractionism and representational art, national pride and international outlook.

Nahit Kabakci had expanded his collection to include works from other Turkish-speaking countries as well recent, sometimes provoking, artistic expressions like pop art and post-modernism.

The exhibition provides an intimate insight into more than 60 years of artistic development in Turkey – and Istanbul takes its rightful place as a cultural centre on the scale of Paris, Berlin or New York.

The exhibition will subsequently be shown at the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar (August 8 – September 19, 2010) and the Pécs Art Museum (October 8 – November 22, 2010).
