NEW YORK, N.Y.- Governors Island received a significant addition to their public art collection. Since August 22, the artist John Sauvé has been on site at the island to supervise the installation of “Man in the City”; one of his monumental new works. “Man in the City” is comprised of several dozen sculptures located throughout the island and will have an overwhelming impact on the Governors Island landscape.

Sauvé is known for using steel to make monumental forms. Working with his team and engineer, the artist will closely supervise the installation of a massive, unique public work for Governors Island, and the entire New York community. Speaking about the installation, Project Director Antony Zito said, “This is a spectacular addition to Governors Island and we are delighted to bring the work of such a preeminent American sculptor. Sauvé’s work spurs the imagination and will be enjoyed by the community.”

Art Historian Ute Weingarten states, “John Sauvé is an artist’s artist, in terms of creating immense, complex objects with tangible physical presence. These sculptures will transform the landscape while at the same time tying in beautifully with—and offering another chapter to Governors Islands existing collection of public art such as Mark di Suvero”

In 2010 John Sauvé’s artwork was commissioned by the Marc Ecko Foundation to be the first public sculpture exhibit installed New York City’s Highline. As part of the 2011 Art Chicago Sculpture Exhibit, Sauvé’s sculpture is located in front of the Merchandise Mart in Downtown Chicago. He lives and works in Brighton, Michigan. The completed sculpture project will be located throughout Governors Island and on view until the island closes in the Fall of 2011.
