Having spent the last five years working in Asia, Phylum presents a fantastical series of 30 monochromatic bestial prints evoking the pioneering 19th century British naturalist Charles Darwin.

With whimsical names such as The Horny Housewife (Prostibula Domestica), The I-Bug (Coleioptera Sonica), The Creeping Brand Shadow (Brandula Luxuriensis), and The Clampburger (Burgivoris Horribilis), The Raf has created a modern surrealist menagerie of imaginatively constructed organisms.

Incorporating real and bogus mythologies and urban legends, The Raf’s twisted genus of critters and parasites are born from a self-absorbed society preoccupied by a myriad of contemporary indulgencies that include physical presentation and enhancement, luxury goods, internet pornography, recreational drugs, and virtual connectivity.

Accompanied by hilarious taxonomical classifications and textual descriptions, Phylum presents a witty perspective upon the values and concerns of a society struggling to govern its own biological determiners. Against a backdrop of SARS, Mad Cow Disease, Bird and Swine Flu, the artist’s Frankenstein-like mutant creatures are a wicked parody of the trends, symptoms, and pitfalls, of an increasingly techno-consumer driven world.

“Phylum” is open to the public daily between 3PM and 1AM at Eat Me Restaurant from June 16 to July 31, 2010.
