Rare Collage Paintings from the 1960′s by Larry Zox at Stephen Haller Gallery

NEW YORK, NY.- Larry Zox: Collage Paintings includes rare early collage works, including Banner, a seminal work from the late artist’s personal collection.

Represented in nearly every major museum in the country, Larry Zox achieved art world prominence in 1973 as the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In the catalogue to that exhibition curator James Monte writes that these earliest collage works are “extremely graphic and take advantage of spatial jumps alternately back into an illusionary picture plane and forward into the viewer’s space.”

Zox’s signature style – the splicing of a color field to give the sensation of shifting planes – was pivotal in these early collage paintings, and evolved into the graceful looping patterns of his later work. The collage paintings on view in this exhibition reveal the individualism and brio that are the hallmarks of Zox’s contribution to American art. Prime examples of Larry Zox’s collage paintings are in the permanent collection and available for study at the Harvard Art Museums.

In the past twelve months Larry Zox’s work has been included in a number of important exhibitions such as Color Fields at Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin. Curated by Guggenheim Director Richard Armstrong, the exhibition featured prominent representatives of post war abstract painting such as Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko, and Larry Zox. Zox’s work from the 60’s was included in two New York exhibitions focusing on the artists of Max’s Kansas City, as well as in the Abrams Image book about the distinguished artists of that historically important scene. An image of Zox’s iconic painting Scissors Jack (for Jean) is reproduced in full color in the update to Michael Batterby’s book Twentieth Century Art surveying important artists and movements from Matisse to Zox.

A key example of Zox’s important paintings from the 1960’s, Decorah, (Single Gemini Series), has just been acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

The exhibition coincides with Connections a group show of gallery artists.
