SAN ANTONIO, TX.- After more than 5 years of service as the first Betty and Bob Kelso Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art, Dr. Marion Oettinger, Jr. has chosen to return to his position as SAMA’s full-time Curator of Latin American Art. Dr. Oettinger previously served as curator for twenty years before assuming the Directorship.

“While we are very grateful to Marion for his years of service as Director, we respect and support his decision to finish out his professional career doing what he loves best. His title will change, but he will continue to be an important part of the Museum.” says Karen Hixon, Chairman of the SAMA’s Board of Trustees. “The Board is in the process of putting together a Search Committee to conduct a national search for a new Director. We are thankful that Marion will continue as Director until such time as the search is completed.”

According to Dr. Oettinger, there are numerous projects associated with SAMA that he would still like to pursue. “Following the heels, of the Missions show, I am eager to dedicate more time to exhibition development. I also want to explore publishing some books about SAMA’s highly regarded Latin American art collection to bring even more attention . The museum has a great future, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of it.”

During Dr. Oettinger’s tenure as Director, the Museum successfully completed two large capital projects: the creation of the 15,000 square foot Lenora and Walter F. Brown Wing for Asian Art and the recently completed Gloria Galt River Landing – a key destination on the city’s new Museum Reach river expansion. Dr. Oettinger also assisted in organizing the “Missions of Northern New Spain” exhibition which wraps up its successful run at the museum on January 3, 2010.
