Solo Exhibition of Sculptures, Paintings and Drawings by Jun Kaneko Opens in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH.- Carl Solway Gallery presents a solo exhibition of sculptures, paintings and drawings by internationally acclaimed artist Jun Kaneko. He is best known for free-standing, monumental ceramic sculptures utilizing simple shapes and elaborate surface design. His Dangos (Japanese for rounded form) may stand as high as thirteen feet. His abstract paintings are also large in scale, while his drawings are more intimate in nature.

Jun Kaneko’s work is included in more than sixty museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, Museum of Arts and Design in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, National Gallery of Australia and The National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan. He has realized over forty public art commissions around the world and he holds three honorary doctorate degrees. His extremely productive oeuvre also includes the design of sets, costumes, properties and projections for the operas Madame Butterfly, Fidelio and a forthcoming production of The Magic Flute.

Kaneko established his current studio in Omaha, Nebraska in 1988, which has grown through subsequent warehouse acquisitions to 140,000 feet of active studio space. Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942, he came to the United States in 1963 to study at the Chouinard Institute of Art in California. He continued his studies with Peter Voulkos at the University of California at Berkeley and Paul Soldner at the Claremont College Graduate School where he graduated in 1971. These artists were instrumental in defining the contemporary ceramics movement, which prized innovation and aesthetics over traditional function. Through his mastery of many mediums, Jun Kaneko now occupies a distinctive place in the world of contemporary art.
