NEW YORK, NY.- Every year The 4heads Collective hotwires an abandoned military barracks on historic Governors Island in beautiful New York Harbor – launching a sizable exposition of independent artists and galleries known as the Governors Island Art Fair. Entering its 3rd year this fall, this extensive exhibition once again features an exciting and diverse selection of artists from around the world. As working artists living in New York City, The 4heads Collective takes a unique swing at the art fair tradition with its “hands-off” curatorial technique. At the Governors Island Art Fair, over 100 independent artists are selected solely on the merit of their work, and, once chosen, each is given a room where they are set loose to create an environment of their own design. The 4heads Collective chooses the artists – the artists choose the work. This year the Fair will present a new section with select galleries showcasing their featured artists. By including these exceptional galleries Fair organizers hope to foster a constructive dialogue between artists and their representatives.

The Governors Island Art Fair commences with an opening party that is free and open to the public on Saturday, September 4th from 11am–6pm. No advance registration is required. The Fair continues every weekend of the month. With no admission fee to enter the Fair, visitors to the island are free to stroll more than 120 rooms of the abandoned army barracks that have been commandeered by participating artists throughout the month of September. Musical acts, performance artists and interactive creative programs will be on-going every weekend in addition to the plethora of paintings, photographs, sculpture, video, and sound and object installation pieces that delineate a vast cross-section of the New York and international art scenes. The public is invited to view these collections every Saturday and Sunday from 11am–6pm, September 4–26th.

“The Governors Island Art Fair is about giving artists, art lovers, curators and art collectors the opportunity to meet on this beautiful island that is like a historic time capsule,” says Nicole Laemmle of The 4heads Collective. “We are excited to bring our event to the island for a third year.”

Just a (FREE!) 5-minute ferry ride from Manhattan, Governors Island includes a National Historic Landmark District featuring 18th century fortifications, pre-Civil War arsenal buildings, Victorian and Romanesque Revival housing, as well as early 20th century neo-classical architecture. Twenty-two of Governors Island’s 172 acres comprise the Governors Island National Monument, which is owned and operated by the National Park Service. The island boasts sixteen acres of recreational facilities encircled by a one-mile esplanade for jogging and walking which features New York’s closest view of the Statue of Liberty from land.
